I'm arriving for the autumn semester. What are the dates?

Arrival Day is Tuesday 18 August 2026, at AF-Borgen, Sandgatan 2. Lund University staff meet arrivals at Copenhagen Airport from 07.30 to 18.30 and at Lund C from 08.30 to 19.30, and the venue itself is open 09.00–20.00, with minivan lifts to accommodation.

Orientation Weeks run 18–30 August, and the autumn semester runs Monday 31 August 2026 to Sunday 17 January 2027 — though the exact dates vary a little between faculties.

Two things to plan around. Staff are at the airport and the station on Arrival Day only. And if you arrive later than 19.30 that evening you will need somewhere to sleep that night, because the desk will have closed. If you have a place through LU Accommodation or AF Bostäder, Arrival Day is where you collect the keys.

Question 2

Both housing applications closed months ago. What is actually still open to me?

This is the honest starting point, and most guides bury it. LU Accommodation's application window for autumn 2026 opened on 27 April and closed on 12 May. AF Bostäder's novisch lottery is tied to the day your admission notice arrives, in early July. If you are reading this in late July or August, both of those have passed.

What is still open:

BoPoolen (bopoolen.nu), run by the Lund University Student Unions' Association, is free, has no queue, and every advert is checked before it is published. It is the main second-hand and lodger market in Lund and the first place to look.

Late applications to LU Accommodation continue into September — you just lose any priority or guarantee you would have had.

LKF, the municipal housing company, has a free queue you can join from age 16, and — unusually — its registration form accepts a date of birth if you do not yet have a Swedish personal number.

Boplats Syd covers 22 municipalities in Skåne for 300 kr a year, though its Lund listings are thin compared with Malmö.

And commuting is normal here rather than a defeat: Malmö and Eslöv are 10–15 minutes by train, Landskrona 15–25, Helsingborg 30–40.

I have nowhere to stay when I land. Is there any safety net?

The university does not run emergency housing, and says plainly that you should have accommodation sorted before you arrive. What exists instead is Soffkampanjen — BoPoolen's couch campaign, which recruits people already living in Lund to lend a bed or a sofa during August and September. BoPoolen also staff Arrival Day specifically to help students who have not found somewhere.

Their own observation, worth holding on to: most students find good accommodation within a month of starting.

How do I tell a housing scam from a real advert?

Lund University points people at BoPoolen's guidance rather than writing its own, so these are BoPoolen's six warning signs, in their words:

The landlord says they are not in Sweden and therefore cannot show the apartment. They demand large sums in deposit or advance rent. They want payment through, for example, Western Union, or to a foreign bank account, or via a lawyer abroad. They say the flat will go to someone else if you do not send money right away. They will not give their name and personal identity number. They are not registered at the same address as the flat in the advert.

Two of their checks are unusually practical. Start a Swish transfer of 1 kr to the landlord's phone number and cancel it once you can see whether the name that comes up is really theirs. And run the advert's photos through a reverse image search to see whether the same rooms are being let by six other people.

The single rule that protects you: only pay a deposit or advance once you have a signed contract and a key in your hand that works. It is always reasonable to ask to see the room first.

For scale, the police add: never pay in advance before you have seen the flat and signed; be wary if the landlord is abroad and still wants money up front; check with the property owner that the person letting it really holds the lease; ask for identification; insist on a written contract.

What is a reasonable rent, and what is a reasonable deposit?

BoPoolen publishes a benchmark that is useful precisely because it is unglamorous: about 4 550 kr a month is reasonable for a fully furnished room in Lund, including electricity and internet. Lund University puts typical student accommodation at 4 000–8 000 kr. An advert far below that range is a warning sign, not a bargain.

On deposits, the widely repeated "one month" rule is not law. Sweden has no statutory cap on rental deposits — the government's own 2023 review said the legal position is partly unclear, and a proposal to cap it at two months' rent was never enacted. What exists is guidance: BoPoolen recommends no more than one month's rent, paid when the contract is signed, and the Swedish Union of Tenants says it should not exceed a couple of months' rent and must be written into the contract.

For comparison, LU Accommodation's own deposit is 5 000 kr, added to your first rent invoice and refunded roughly four to eight weeks after you move out.

One thing that is unambiguously illegal: paying for the contract itself. Selling, buying or brokering a rental contract carries fines or up to two years in prison. A landlord may charge rent; they may not charge you for the privilege of getting the lease.

If I am overcharged, can I get the money back?

It depends entirely on what kind of home it is, and this is where most student housing guides are wrong.

If you are subletting a rented flat (a hyresrätt), you are well protected. The rent may not exceed what the first-hand tenant pays, plus at most a 15% markup if it is furnished, and the tribunal can order overpayments repaid up to two years back. You must apply within three months of moving out.

If you are renting a room or flat that the owner owns — a bostadsrätt, a house, or an owner-occupied flat, which is the typical student sublet — you are covered by the privatuthyrningslag instead, and it is much weaker. A new version of that law came into force on 1 July 2026, so almost everything written about it online before then is out of date. Under it the tribunal can only step in if the rent is substantially higher than what comparable private lets charge, and it cannot order any money repaid at all. The most you can get is the rent lowered from here on.

Also worth knowing: a sublet needs the landlord's or the tribunal's permission. Subletting without it puts the first-hand tenant's own flat at risk — which is a reason a landlord might be evasive, and a reason to ask.

Where do I report a scam if I have already paid?

Call the police on 114 14. From a foreign phone that is +46 77 114 14 00. In an emergency, 112.

The online fraud report is not usually an option for a new arrival: it requires a Swedish personal number or coordination number, which you probably do not have yet. Report it by phone or in person instead, and do it before contacting any insurer.

If you are not sure yet — if something feels wrong and you have not paid — BoPoolen ask you to contact them first. They will look at the advert with you.

Do I need a personnummer, and how do I get one in Lund?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how long you are staying, not on where you are from. If you are moving to Sweden for a year or more, you register in the population register and get a personal identity number. Under a year, you apply for a coordination number (samordningsnummer) instead; if you later register as resident, it is replaced by a personal number.

Lund University is blunt about the consequence: if you study here for less than 12 months you cannot register for a Swedish identity number, and you are therefore not covered by the Swedish social security system.

You start with the "Moving to Sweden" e-service on skatteverket.se, which you can submit up to two weeks before you move, and then attend in person for an identity check. In Lund that happens at the service centre at Stora Södergatan 45, run by Statens servicecenter — and you must book an appointment before you go. Opening hours are published only a week at a time, so check before travelling across town.

Expect it to take about four weeks for your case to be assigned to an administrator, which is not the same as being finished. Without a number you cannot log in to the 1177 health services or file most police reports online, and you pay unsubsidised patient fees.

Can I open a bank account before I have a personnummer?

You have more right to one than you may be told. Under the EU payment accounts rules, as implemented in Swedish law, anyone who can show they live in the EEA is entitled to a basic payment account, and Sweden's consumer banking bureau states directly that lacking a personal identity number is not in itself a valid reason to refuse you. A bank may only refuse on money-laundering grounds or a small list of specific reasons.

In practice the guidance conflicts. The university says you will usually need a personal number and a Swedish tax-agency ID card. SEB's own instructions for new arrivals ask EU/EEA citizens for a passport, and non-EU/EEA citizens for a residence permit card and passport, with no personal number named. If a bank turns you away, it is worth asking for the refusal in writing and pointing at the basic-account right.

BankID is a separate question, and we could not verify whether it can be issued against a coordination number — banks' own pages do not say clearly, and their routines differ. Do not assume you will have BankID in your first weeks, and do not let anyone rush you into a payment that depends on having it.

Question 10

What are the student nations, and do I have to join one?

There are thirteen nations in Lund. Twelve of them sit inside Studentlund, the shared membership; Smålands nation stands outside it. You join one nation, and that one membership gives you access to activities at all the others.

Joining is not required in order to study. It is required for nation life — and it is required to stand in AF Bostäder's housing queue, which is the single biggest reason international students join. Registration for autumn 2026 opened on 1 July. There is a trap in it: your membership is not complete until you actually enrol in a nation, which means physically visiting one.

We are not printing a membership fee, because no nation and no student body publishes the 2026 figure publicly — it sits behind a login. Ask at the nation. The one price that is published is a guest card at 70 kr for seven days.

On Lundakarnevalen: it runs every four years and the 2026 carnival has already happened, on 22–24 May. The next one is 2030.

How does healthcare work, and what does it cost?

1177 is the free advice line, answered by nurses, day or night. From a foreign phone it is +46 771-11 77 00. You will be asked for your personal or coordination number when you call. Emergencies are 112, answered in Swedish and English.

You are automatically listed at the vårdcentral nearest your registered address, and you can change twice in twelve months, through 1177 or on a paper form.

Region Skåne's 2026 patient fees: 200 kr for a vårdcentral visit, 400 kr for hospital emergency care. Under-20s and over-85s pay nothing. There is a ceiling of 1 450 kr across a rolling twelve months, after which you get a frikort and pay nothing more.

EU and EEA students should bring a European Health Insurance Card, ordered from home before you travel — it gets you the same fees a Swedish resident pays. It does not cover planned treatment. Emergency care is available regardless.

Lund University provides free state insurance through Kammarkollegiet for incoming students — Student IN for exchange students, FAS+ for non-EU/EEA students who do not qualify for it — running from two weeks before your studies to two weeks after. Two limits matter: it does not cover routine, non-urgent healthcare, and it does not cover healthcare outside Sweden. If you have a condition needing regular appointments, arrange separate cover.

Studenthälsan, the student health centre at Sandgatan 3, is free and confidential — but it is closed from 6 July to 9 August, which is exactly the arrival window.

Question 12

How do I pay for buses and trains, and is there a student discount?

Skånetrafiken runs the buses, the Pågatåg, the tram and, jointly, the Öresund trains. You can buy in the app, at machines, on the website, at the customer centre at Lund C (Bangatan 10B, weekdays 08.00–17.30), or tap a bank card on green city buses and trams. Tapping costs 32 kr for an adult city ticket valid an hour, capped at two single fares in 24 hours — but it is always full price and cannot be combined with a student or child discount.

There is a real student discount and it is separate from the age-based one: 25% off all tickets within Skåne, and 35% off 30-day and Flex 10/30 tickets to Denmark. You need a digital student ID from Mecenat, WeStudents, Hitract or Studentkortet, plus photo identification, and you must be studying at least half time and 15 credits.

If you land before mid-August, compare the Sommarbiljett — 595 kr for all of Skåne from 15 June to 15 August — against a 30-day pass. It does not cover the Öresund bridge.

Question 13

How do I get a bike without accidentally buying a stolen one?

The quickest option is not to buy at all at first: Lundahoj, the city bike share, is 75 kr for a year or 25 kr for three days, with 250 bikes at 20 stations, and the first half hour of every trip is free.

If you are buying second-hand, take this seriously. There is no Swedish national bicycle register — parliament declined to create one in March 2026 — and the police offer no frame-number lookup. Several sites that student guides still recommend for checking a frame number no longer exist at all. Cykeldatabasen.se is the one working free lookup, but its own FAQ concedes it does not contain police theft reports: a clean result there means "not in this voluntary database", not "not stolen". The only real check is to phone 114 14 with the frame number.

Why it matters: buying in good faith does not give you ownership in Sweden. The original owner can reclaim the bike, and a buyer who had reasonable grounds to suspect it was stolen commits an offence — häleriförseelse, punishable by a fine or up to six months. It is the buyer's responsibility to notice.

The safest routes are an established shop with a warranty — Cykelexperten on Bankgatan, Fridhems on Bredgatan, J&C Lindelöfs on Traktorgränden — or the municipal auctions of unclaimed bikes, held a few times a year at Skiffervägen 92 at Gastelyckan, where the receipt gives you clean legal title. Two catches at the auction: payment is by Swish only, so you need a Swedish bank account, and no upcoming date is currently published.

Question 14

My bike has disappeared. Was it stolen or impounded?

Both are common in Lund, and they are handled completely differently.

If it was impounded, it is because it was parked wrongly or left too long. By law a bike may not be parked for more than 24 hours in a row on weekdays within the built-up area, and enforcement concentrates around Lund C and the city centre. LKP takes them in, and it costs 500 kr to get one back. Collection is at Skiffervägen 92 — by appointment only, arranged by email to info@lkpab.se, phone 046-35 59 23, weekdays 08.00–16.00. Do not turn up unannounced. Note that LKP's English pages still show an older 200 kr fee and an old address; the Swedish pages are the current ones.

Act quickly. LKP describes a three-month storage period, but the municipality's own legal notice board states the statutory period as one month from notification, and it lists impounded bikes by date. Assume weeks, not months.

If you are leaving Lund for a while, there are two places you may legally leave a bike for 14 days: the north-west corner of Clemenstorget, and part of the cycle parking between Västra Stationstorget and Lokföraregatan.

If it was stolen, report it to the police before you contact any insurer. The online report at polisen.se needs a Swedish personal or coordination number; without one, call 114 14.
