The rule that surprises people

None of these sites are inside the EU Bathing Water Directive's own monitoring programme, so none carries a four-year class — that is not a failing grade, just a different kind of site. Read the latest sample instead.

Why rain changes it

The Stångån runs straight through the city centre, and heavy rain pushes stormwater into it faster than the lakes further out.

Two different things

The class is a snapshot from a lab sample taken now and then — not a live status. The rain figure is a heuristic, not a test: it tells you stormwater may be running, never that the water is clean or dirty. Neither is a guarantee; after heavy rain, give it a day or two and favour the beaches graded highest.

Only a site inside the EU Bathing Water Directive's own monitoring programme gets a four-year classification; none of Linköping's own sites are, so every one reads "not classified" here rather than a grade.

What the laboratory measured on the most recent visit

Every sample is tested for two indicator bacteria, Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci, each counted per 100 ml of water — it is the worse of the two that decides the sample's overall word above.

The bathing season runs 15 May to 15 September; bacterial samples are taken 2–3 times each season, June to August (linkoping.se).
