Every villa and fritidshus in Linköpings kommun now has two bins with four compartments each. They replaced the single old bin during 2026, they are emptied on different days, and between them they take almost everything a household throws away.
The rule underneath it all is one question: was this used to hold or protect something you bought? If yes it is a förpackning, and it is sorted by what it is made of — plastic, paper, metal, clear glass, coloured glass. If no, it is restavfall. A drinking glass is not a förpackning; a jam jar is.
Type what you’re throwing out — it tells you which bag or cart it goes in.
What is left when everything else has been sorted out. Tie the bag shut.
Packaging made of plastic, emptied and loose (not bagged together).
Packaging made of metal — tins, foil trays, caps and lids.
Newspapers, magazines, printed paper. Not packaging — that goes in pappersförpackningar.
Small batteries, small electronics and light bulbs, in the separate compartment for them.
Food waste, only in the green bag. Linköping's green bags are sorted out again at the plant, so the bag matters.
Packaging made of paper or card — cartons, boxes, paper bags, wrapping paper.
Clear glass jars and bottles. Lids and caps come off and go with metal or plastic.

Large cardboard, long fluorescent tubes, bulky plastic and anything else that will not fit go to a återvinningsstation or a återvinningscentral, both of which stay open.
1,049 kr a year grundavgift, plus 764 kr for Soptunna 1 and 761 kr for Soptunna 2 — 2,574 kr a year in total, including VAT. Neighbours who share bins each pay their own full grundavgift on their own invoice.
A ventilated holder for the green food-waste bag can be picked up at no charge from any staffed återvinningscentral. The new bag is made of biodegradable bioplastic and is more sensitive to damp than the old one, so the airflow helps.
