St. Augustine South sits between the Matanzas River and US-1, and when a hurricane comes the county evacuates by zone. The zone that matters is your address's, not the neighborhood's: along the river the zones are lettered A, the first ones asked to leave, while streets further back are lettered C. For residents who can't drive themselves out, and for anyone who needs medical equipment or oxygen at a shelter. Both registrations are done ahead of the season, not during the storm.
Zone lines here follow the water. Addresses along Shore Drive and the rest of the Matanzas riverfront come back as Zone A — the zone ordered out first and at the lowest storm category — while addresses further inland come back as Zone C. The difference can be a few blocks, so check your own address rather than assuming the neighborhood shares one zone. Renting, or new to the street? Check it anyway; zones follow the ground, not how long you have lived on it.
In October 2016 Hurricane Matthew stayed offshore and still pushed a storm surge of roughly seven feet up the Matanzas, by the National Hurricane Center's account of the storm. Water came into riverfront homes that had never taken it before. A category number tells you about the wind; the zone letter is about the water, which is what reaches this community first.
St. Augustine South is unincorporated, so evacuation zones, orders, shelters and alerts all come from St. Johns County, not from the City of St. Augustine and not from the St. Augustine South Improvement Association, which is a volunteer neighborhood association rather than a government. When you hear an order for "the city of St. Augustine", check whether it covers your zone — the county's page and your alerts will say.
Write your zone letter somewhere you will find it in a hurry — on the fridge, in your phone, on the pad by the door — and tell the people who would be leaving with you. Add a note of where you would go and who would drive. An order can arrive with a day's notice, and everything decided beforehand is one less thing to work out with the power flickering.
