Hurricane Shelters

St. Johns County hurricane evacuation shelters

16 designated shelters — the published list, not an alert

The St. Johns County hurricane evacuation shelters (general, pet-friendly and special medical needs), the nearest to you, and how to register for a ride.

The county tells residents which shelters are open during an evacuation order, so this list is where to look before a storm, not a promise about any one of them. The school closest to your home may not be a shelter at all.

In a general or pet-friendly shelter each person is allotted 20 square feet; in a special medical needs shelter, 60. The county's list of what to bring starts with 3 days of water (one gallon per person per day), 3 days of ready-to-eat food and a 7-day supply of medications.

If you cannot drive yourself out, the county will take you to a shelter once an evacuation is ordered, but only if you have registered. Registration is open all year, and the county says to do it before hurricane season, not during a storm. Submitting the form is not the same as being registered: the county reviews each one.

This page is a list, not an alert

It is the register of shelters the authority has designated. It does not tell you that anything is happening, and it does not tell you to leave.

Official guidance

General shelters

St. Johns County public schools that meet current hurricane shelter standards serve as evacuation shelters during hurricanes. If possible, stay with friends, family, or at a hotel outside the evacuated areas, as shelters are meant to be a last resort.

Special medical needs shelters

Special Medical Needs Shelters are for persons with medical needs that cannot be met in a General Shelter. This typically includes individuals who require electricity to power life-saving medical devices such as oxygen concentrators or CPAP machines. Pre-registration is required.

What this page can and cannot tell you

  • This is the register the authority publishes. It is not an evacuation order and not a live alert.
  • Whether to leave, and where to go on the day, comes from the official channels above — never from this page.
  • This page does not promise that anywhere is safe. It repeats the designated places, and any capacities, exactly as the authority lists them.
  • Distances are measured in a straight line. The walk is longer, and the route may not be direct.
