Eindhoven has one of the highest bike-theft rates in the Netherlands, and the figures below are the police's own: how many bikes and mopeds were reported stolen across the city each month, and which districts the reports came from. They update themselves — nobody re-types them. Underneath is the practical half: where a bike can be left with someone watching it, and what to do the day yours is gone.
Half of 18 Septemberplein is closed for works
The city's parking page says maintenance runs from 30 April to mid-September and that only about half the 1,400 spaces are available meanwhile. On a busy Saturday the Heuvel stalling is the nearer fallback.
Pop-up stallingen are not staffed
The city puts temporary pop-up stallingen out at events and around Stratumseind on some nights. They are useful, but the gemeente is explicit that parking in one is at your own risk — they are not the staffed sites listed here.

Where the reports come from
Reports over the last 12 months, by the district the police recorded them in. This is where a bike was taken from, not where the person who lost it lives — a district full of shops, bars and stations collects thefts from everyone who rode there.

How to read these numbers
The register counts bike, moped and light-moped thefts in one category — there is no finer grain published, so a number here is not bikes alone.
These are reported thefts. A great many are never reported at all, so the figures are a floor, not a count of what happened — and a district getting busier may partly mean more people are bothering to report.
The table is published monthly and runs about six weeks behind, with quiet revisions to older months. Nothing here describes this week.

Where to leave a bike
Staffed places to park, from the operators’ own listings. Someone is watching these, which is a different thing from a good lock — and the cheapest ones are often free.
Underground, staffed and free — the obvious place to leave a bike in the centre. No mopeds or scooters. The city says maintenance work from 30 April to mid-September leaves only about half the spaces usable, so it can fill up.
Eindhoven removes bikes that are not in a rack, are in the way, or are locked to street furniture — and, in the designated areas, any bike left untouched for more than 28 days. Those areas are the city centre, the Kruisstraat and the Woenselse Markt, Winkelcentrum Woensel, the Eindhoven Noord sports grounds and the Genneperparken — the gemeente’s own page gives the exact street boundary of the centre. Removed bikes are photographed onto verlorenofgevonden.nl, updated every working day, from the day after they were taken. It costs €20 to get one back — a great deal better than a theft you never had.

Find the frame number
The framenummer is stamped into the frame itself, usually under the bottom bracket where the pedals turn, and it is on the receipt from the shop. Without it the report is much weaker: it is what the register matches on, and most insurers ask for it. If your bike is still here, go and write it down now.

File the aangifte
Report it online at politie.nl/aangifte, or by phone on 0900-8844. Do it within seven days — bike insurers generally require a report inside that window, and the sooner it is filed the sooner the frame number is flagged.

Then it is in the national register
The report feeds the RDW Fietsdiefstalregister. The police have up to ten days to check the details before the bike shows there as stolen, after which anyone — a buyer, a shop, a police officer — can match the frame number against it. This is also why you check that register before buying anything second-hand.

What actually helps
Two locks beat one, and two kinds beat two of the same: a heavy chain or D-lock through the frame and a fixed rack, plus the ring lock on the wheel. A thief carrying the tool for one often is not carrying the tool for the other.
Lock the frame to something bolted down. A bike locked only to itself is carried away and cut open somewhere quiet.
A staffed stalling beats any lock. All three of the city's free ones are staffed, so in the centre the safe option costs nothing.
Write the frame number down today and keep it somewhere that is not the bike — a photo of it in your phone is enough. Recovering a bike without it is close to hopeless.
Buying second-hand: run the frame number through the RDW register and StopHeling before you pay. A seller who will not give you the number is telling you something.

The Eindhoven bike depot
Vestdijk 147, open every working day 07:30–16:00, telephone 040 238 50 23 or 06 55 40 55 85, or fietsdepot@eindhoven.nl. Bring photo ID and the key to your bike or lock to prove it is yours; the depot takes card payment only, and only you can collect your own bike. If you think the removal was wrong, you can object to it — the gemeente page sets out what a bezwaarschrift has to contain.
Where the city stands nationally
Eindhoven ranked sixth in the Netherlands for bike theft in 2024, at 20.6 reports per 1,000 households, with 646 of them in the Binnenstad alone. That is the backdrop to the monthly figures above — this is a city where locking up properly is ordinary, not paranoid.
