About these tools
Town Tools builds free, public tools for Eindhoven and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

TNO's regional sensor network reads fine dust and nitrogen dioxide at twelve fixed points across Eindhoven, every hour. Three of them also measure ultrafine particles — the pollutant behind the recurring argument about the airport's health effect, which no forecast model reports at all.
Why ultrafine particles are on this page
The recurring local argument about the airport's health effect is about ultrafine particles (UFP) — particles too small for a standard PM2.5 monitor to count. Only 3 of these 12 sensors measure UFP, and even those report it on well under half of their hourly ticks, so a missing UFP reading here usually means the sensor didn't have one this hour, not that the air was clean.

What "above guideline" means here
Each reading is one hour, not a 24-hour average — WHO’s guideline (PM2.5 15 µg/m³, PM10 45 µg/m³, NO₂ 25 µg/m³) is a daily mean, so a single hour above it is common and expected, not itself a breach of the guideline. This page compares the number to that guideline plainly; it is not a published air quality index, and no severity beyond “above” or “at or below” is claimed.
These are TNO's own regional sensor readings, not a certified reference-grade station, and each figure is one hour rather than a daily average. Compared against WHO's 2021 guideline levels for context, not against any official Dutch legal limit.
