Three instruments, on a network the city puts at more than 900 km of walking and cycling paths. Each one describes the surface directly under it and nothing else — a Super-class baana can be bare while a side path two streets away is still ice.
Oulu cycles all winter, and the daily question is what is actually under the wheel. The city has road-weather stations standing on the baana cycleways themselves — not on the motorway beside them — and they measure the snow lying on the path, how cold the surface is, and the dew point, every fifteen minutes. Each one has a camera pointed along the path.
This page reads those instruments directly. It is a companion to the neighbour-reported board, not a replacement: a sensor cannot tell you a path was ploughed into ridges, and a neighbour cannot tell you the surface is at −0.4 °C with the dew point above it.

The city refreshes these pictures every few minutes. They carry no timestamp of their own, so treat the picture as recent rather than as of a stated minute.

The city logs its walking-and-cycling maintenance vehicles minute by minute, and this counts the passes logged across the whole city in the last 24 hours. It says whether crews are out. It cannot tell you whether your own street has been done.
A Super-class main cycleway is ploughed within three hours of 2 cm of snow falling between 05:00 and 23:00, or 4 cm overnight, and gritted or roughened within three hours of the surface freezing or being found slippery. A Class I walking-and-cycling path is ploughed within four hours of 3 cm, and on weekday mornings after overnight snow it should be done by 07:00, and again by 16:00. A Class II path is ploughed within six hours of 5 cm, straight after the Class I paths, and gritted within four hours. The city notes that sudden weather can delay all of it.
Oulu ran an SMS service that warned people when it turned slippery. The city ended it at the start of the 2025–26 winter and asked residents to follow the weather themselves. There is no city-run slip alert any more — which is part of why the numbers below are worth reading directly.
When the path surface is at or below freezing and the dew point is at or above the surface temperature, moisture in the air freezes straight onto the surface. That is the condition that turns a dry-looking path into ice, and it is close to the city's own trigger for gritting.
These stations publish faults as readings: one anemometer here reported the same impossible wind speed and the same impossible compass bearing a month apart. Every value is checked against what the instrument can physically measure, and anything outside that is left off and named. The check catches the impossible, not the merely inaccurate.
