Oulu's year swings harder on light than almost anything else. In June the sun barely sets; around Christmas it's up for only about three and a half hours. This works out today's daylight from the sun's position over Oulu — no forecast, nothing to keep updated, always right for the date.

Oulu sits just south of the Arctic Circle, so it doesn't get true midnight sun — but it comes close. Around midsummer the sun dips only about a degree and a half below the horizon at its lowest, so from roughly late May to late July it never gets darker than a bright dusk. On the longest day the sun is up about 22 hours, rising near 2:20 in the morning and setting close to 23:40.
This is the season the city lives outside: the Nallikari beach, the market square, terraces open late, and the light that never quite goes.
At the winter solstice the sun clears the horizon for only about three and a half hours — up around 10:30 and down near 14:00 — and even at noon it stays low, so the light is long and golden the whole time it's out. It is never true polar night here: the sun does rise every day.
The upside of the long dark is the sky. From late autumn to spring the nights are dark enough for the northern lights, and the snow throws back what little daylight there is.
For the endless daylight and the warmest weather, mid-June to July. For the northern lights and snow, the dark half from late August to April, with March and early April often the sweet spot — still dark at night but longer, milder days. Ice swimming and sauna at Nallikari run right through the frozen months.
