Where Kotor's water comes from
Kotor is fed from two coastal springs — Orahovac and Tabačina. In a hot, busy summer, when demand is high and the springs yield less, seawater pushes into them and the supply turns brackish; to protect it, ViK cuts and rotations follow. When it is bad, ViK runs tanker trucks (cisterne) with drinking water along the shore from Dobrota to Risan. Dobrota, Sveti Stasije, Orahovac, Perast and Risan are the settlements most often named in the shortage; Stoliv, Muo and Prčanj have sometimes kept fresh supply through the same spell.
The water utility — DOO Vodovod i kanalizacija Kotor (ViK)
ViK runs the town's water. Call the on-call line (032 323 071, or mobiles 067 263 636 / 067 263 610) to report a burst or a dry line. Service notices ("servisne informacije") and tanker schedules are posted on the ViK site, on Radio Kotor (radiokotor.info) and on the ViK Facebook page; faults can also be logged on the municipal portal sistem48.kotor.me.
When the springs turn brackish the tap water tastes salty. Salty water is not safe to drink or to cook with, and it should not go to babies or anyone on a low-salt diet — during those spells rely on the ViK tanker trucks and bottled water, and watch the ViK site and Radio Kotor for the "nije za piće" (not for drinking) notices. Boil notices, when issued, appear in the same places.
