About these tools

Town Tools builds free, public tools for Alexandria and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

Where the town floods

The same low places go under in heavy rain, every wet season. If you live, work or travel through one of these, plan around the low roads before the rain sets in.

Mansheya — in front of the Unknown Soldier monument

Mansheya, Downtown

Named by the head of the sanitary drainage company as a place where his crews pumped standing water off the road during the 25 December 2022 storm.

Al-Gomhuriya Hospital approach

Downtown

Named in the same 2022 report: water was pumped from in front of the hospital. Worth knowing if you are heading to an appointment in a storm.

Under the Qabbari bridge, opposite Carrefour

Qabbari / West

Named in the 2022 report as an underpass where water collected and was pumped out. A low underpass is the first place a car is stranded.

In front of the New Bus Station (al-Mawqif al-Gedid)

West

Named in the 2022 report. If you travel out of the city by bus in the storm season, allow extra time to reach it.

Smouha and Victor Emmanuel Square

East

Reported by Youm7 after the November 2020 storm, together with the wall of the Sporting Club.

Why it floods here

The sanitary drainage company says the city has about 32,000 street gullies, 120,000 manholes and 66 outfalls that discharge directly into the sea, and puts around 150 vehicles and pumps at 202 lifting and treatment stations on standby before a big storm. Even so, the network is built for ordinary winter rain: a long downpour on a flat shoreline city fills the low roads and underpasses faster than it can empty them.

“Several pools of rainwater are expected if heavy rain continues for several hours.”
— Maj. Gen. Mahmoud Nafea, head of the Alexandria sanitary drainage company, to Al-Watan on 31 January 2023 (translated from Arabic)
