Ura sits on the edge of the drained Ecsedi-láp marsh — flat, heavy, badly-draining farmland. The river here is managed (a detention reservoir has cut Szamos flood levels since 2014), but the everyday hazard is belvíz: rain with nowhere to go, standing on the fields and low farm tracks rather than rising in a channel.

In 2010, Hungary's worst inland-water year on record, the government declared a state of emergency across much of the country — Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Ura's county, was named among the worst-affected, alongside Csongrád, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Hajdú-Bihar. The emergency here started in mid-May 2010. It is the standing reminder that this is a flat-plain, standing-water hazard, not a river one.
