January

This is the pattern of past years, not a forecast. Both monsoons shift by weeks from year to year and they fail independently — the district can look adequately watered while the town itself stays dry, and in one recent season the district took 384 mm while Udhagamandalam's own limits took 135 mm. A landslide can close a ghat road at any point in the wet season. Check the live sources below before you travel or plan around a month.

February
The quietest weeks. Forest fire season opens across the district — the forest department cuts fire lines and burns them off, and trails and reserve roads close at short notice when a fire runs.
March
Fire season continues through March. Recent seasons have burned thousands of acres in the district, closing trails, roads and parts of the Mudumalai reserve.
April
Peak season starts. In a recent season 3.33 lakh people visited in April alone, against a resident town of 88,430. The district vehicle cap binds hardest now: if your vehicle is not TN-43, apply for the e-pass as soon as you know your date.
May
The busiest month of the year: 3.97 lakh visitors in a recent season, the Summer Festival, and the Flower Show at the Government Botanical Garden. Book ahead, and expect queues along Commercial Road and at Charing Cross whatever the vehicle cap says.
June
Landslide season begins on the ghat roads, and the Gudalur–Naduvattam road is the one that moves. Check the road you plan to use before you set out — in either direction.
July
Deep south-west monsoon. Quiet in town, and the ghat roads are the thing to watch: slides have closed the highway near Naduvattam and have come down inside the municipal limits at Nondimedu and Manjanakorai.
August
The monsoon continues and the landslide risk stays with it. A good month for anyone who wants the town to themselves and does not mind being rained on.
September
The rain begins to let up and the plateau is at its greenest. Slide risk on the western roads lasts until the monsoon properly withdraws.
October
This is the rain that matters to the town rather than to the district: Parson's Valley and the other reservoirs refill on the north-east monsoon, not the south-west. A weak October and November is what a dry spring is made of.
November
The rain tails off and the cold comes back. A quiet, clear-edged month between the two visitor waves.
December
Hethai Habba begins in the hattis. In late December 2025 the ground at Kandhal, Thalaikundha and the Kuthirapanthaya ground fell to about −1 °C — a second, smaller tourist wave came to photograph the frost while growers lost carrot shoots and tea flush on the same nights.

The north-east monsoon opens — the second wet season, and a heavy one.
