If you are not sure who to call
For an emergency, 1077 is the district's own control room and is answered around the clock — it is the number the Nilgiris administration itself advertises, and it routes anything the district handles: a road blocked, a wild animal in a settlement, water that has not come for days, a fallen tree. The district also answers a WhatsApp line for things that are not emergencies.
Wildlife in a settlement
Gaur, elephants, leopards and bears move through the estates and settlements of the Nilgiris, and people have been killed in the district. Call 1077 — the Collectorate Control Room is answered around the clock and routes wildlife to the forest department.
We have deliberately not printed a direct forest-department number here. The district portal has no forest department page and no forest number anywhere on it, the Tamil Nadu forest department's own site would not answer us, and the numbers circulating on listing sites are unsourced. A number that rings nowhere is worse than no number on the one page where that matters. Collectorate Control Room
The district's own emergency line, day and night — landslides, blocked roads, wildlife in a settlement, flooding, and anything else the administration handles
Piped water, drainage, waste collection, street lighting, the municipal market and property tax — for all 36 wards of the town. The municipality also publishes 0423-2223244 for this office; if one number does not answer, try the other.
India's single emergency number, which reaches police, fire and ambulance anywhere in the country. The district's own helpline page lists the numbers above rather than this one, so we have put it last — but it works.
There is no separate published number for water-supply complaints. This is the engineering side of the same municipality and is the closest thing to one.
