Worth knowing

Why this page reads two zone codes

The National Weather Service issues some products on a county code and others on a forecast zone, and neither contains the other. Tornado, severe thunderstorm, flash flood and air quality alerts come on the county code — TNC187 for Williamson. Heat, flood watch, red flag and fire weather come on the forecast zone, TNZ059. A page reading only one of them would be silently deaf to half the hazards, so this one reads both.

When a warning arrives, the sirens are not the plan

Outdoor sirens are meant for people who are outdoors. Indoors, at night, the thing that reaches you is a phone alert or a weather radio. Work out in advance which room you would go to — an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows — because a warning gives minutes, not time to think about it.

No weather warning is a power or water outage

A storm that knocks the power out does not produce an NWS warning about your street. Middle Tennessee Electric takes outage reports on 877-777-9020, around the clock. For a water problem it is H.B. & T.S. Utility District on 615-794-7796, and for a sewer backup the Town's operators answer 24 hours on 615-245-7490.
