Worth knowing

Tornadoes and flooding, not snow

Starkville's real hazards are spring and fall severe storms and localized flooding on flat ground — not winter weather. A February 2025 tornado warning sent dorm residents to first floors, and heavy storms have flooded parts of campus (Old Main, Bowen, Sessums) and nearby streets.

Know your shelter before the watch

A Watch means conditions are right for severe storms — a good time to pick your safe room and charge a phone. A Warning means it's happening now. If you're in a mobile or manufactured home, plan where you'll go before the sky turns; those offer little protection in a tornado.
