The winter light-up is Shirakawa-gō's best-known event — four January evenings when the thatched village glows in the snow. It is now fully reservation-based: you cannot simply drive out and look. This lays out the ways in, how each is decided, and when to book, so an evening in the snow doesn't end at a closed gate.
On a light-up evening the village is fully reservation-based (完全予約制). Without a reservation you will be turned away at the village entrance — even if you have driven for hours. Every route below is a way to hold a reservation for the evening. Sort it out well in advance; the popular slots fill fast.

When to bookThe 2027 sale dates, times and price are announced around early September on the tourism association site (in 2026 sales opened in two rounds, in September and December).
How it works
Watch the tourism association's light-up page from early September for the 2027 sale dates.
Book your car space online the moment your chosen evening opens — rounds sell out.
Drive to the reserved village car park on the evening; entry is included.
The hilltop deck gives the classic view down over the lit village. On light-up evenings it is timed, ticket-only, and you cannot choose your slot — in practice you only get up there by winning the overnight-stay lottery or by booking a bus tour that includes it. Independent car visitors cannot get a deck ticket on those evenings. On an ordinary (non-light-up) day the deck is reached by a ¥300 shuttle bus or a 15-minute walk, roughly 9:00–16:10 — which does not cover the 17:30–19:30 light-up window.
Exact dates and prices are announced in early September
The four evenings and the fully-reservation rule are confirmed. But the exact reservation open dates and times, this winter's prices, the overnight-lottery window and the observation-deck fee are published by the tourism association from around early September 2026. The figures on this page are last year's, shown for planning only — always check the official page for the confirmed 2027 details before you book.
The Shirakawa-gō Tourism Association runs the light-up and all of its reservations. The village bus-parking system covers tour buses and is mandatory from 1 December 2026. In an emergency, dial 119 for fire or ambulance and 110 for police.
Ogimachi is a lived-in village of about 1,500 people that receives some two million visitors a year. The light-up once drew crowds that overwhelmed the single-lane road and residents' daily life, so the village moved it to a full reservation system — to protect both the village and the people who come. Booking properly is part of visiting with respect.
Getting the winter day right
The light-up runs 17:30–19:30 on these four January evenings only. On any winter day the village asks cars to stay out of the World Heritage area between 9:00 and 16:00; the main Seseragi car park is ¥2,000 and open 8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). Studless snow tyres are essential on the mountain roads from December to March.
Apply in the lottery for a room in a village minshuku or ryokan. Winners get parking and — the only reliable way for an independent visitor — a ticket for the observation deck.
