About 1,400 people live in Shirakawa-gō year-round, in the very gasshō-zukuri farmhouses you've come to see. It is a working village and a UNESCO World Heritage site — not a theme park or a film set. Almost everyone who visits is welcome and kind. In the village's own visitor survey, 1 in 4 people arrived knowing none of the local rules, so these are the few things residents ask, and why — so the village stays liveable for the people who call it home.

Treat them as homes, not exhibits.

The village runs on mutual aid

The thatched roofs are still re-laid by the whole community working together — a centuries-old custom called yui (結). The same neighbourliness drives the fire watch: residents patrol for hazards several times a day. You're a guest inside that rhythm.

Fire is the village's oldest fear

Old wood and thatch burn fast, so fire is the one thing the village guards against above all — roughly 59 hidden water cannons stand ready across the settlement, and a village-wide drill fires them every autumn. That's why open flames and careless cigarettes are taken so seriously here.

The houses, gardens and rice fields

The postcard rows of steep-roofed farmhouses are private homes, with working gardens, yards and paddy fields between them. The famous open view is from the Ogimachi Castle Observation Deck and the public lanes.

Take your photos from the public lanes and the observation deck — that's where the classic shot comes from.
Don't step into gardens, yards, doorways or fields for a better angle, and don't photograph into windows.
Keep to the paths — the rice paddies are someone's crop, not a foreground.

Why this matters

Residents have described visitors walking into their yards and trampling the fields to get a picture. It is the part of daily life they find hardest.

Over the rooftops — drones

The village is dense and built of wood and thatch, so a drone is never far from a window or a roof.

Don't fly a drone over the village — it is not permitted here.
In the village's survey, only about 3 in 10 visitors knew this — the least-known rule of all. If you see someone about to fly one, please pass it on.

Why this matters

Drones over the rooftops intrude on homes and risk the thatch; the village asks everyone to leave them packed away.

Fire, smoking and open flames

With roofs of old thatch, a single careless flame is the village's nightmare — the reason for the daily fire patrols and the hidden water cannons.

Don't smoke except in the marked smoking areas — never beside or behind the houses.
Don't bring open flames into the village.
Carry your cigarette ends out with you.

Litter and toilets

Homes back right onto the lanes and there are few public bins, so whatever you bring in has to leave with you.

Carry your rubbish out with you — it's the best-known rule, and it matters.
Use the public toilets (at the car park and marked points).
Don't leave anything — including cigarette ends — in the fields or behind the houses.

Why this matters

Residents have ended up cleaning up litter, and worse, left around their own homes.

In the snow

Winter turns Shirakawa-gō into the scene everyone photographs — but the snow lies in people's gardens, fields and doorways.

Don't build snowmen or have snowball fights in front of homes or in the fields.
Keep to the cleared public paths — and remember winter mornings are when residents are clearing their own snow.

None of this is meant to keep you out. As one resident who works in tourism put it, "We can't exist without tourists… we want others to fall in love with this village that we treasure." Visit with a little humility — recognising that real people live here — and you'll be exactly the kind of guest Shirakawa-gō hopes for.
