Shirakawa-gō's year still runs on the calendar of a farming village of about 1,500 people — planting songs in May, harvest sake in October, fire drills before the snow, and four reserved winter evenings when the gasshō houses are lit. Several of these are working village events rather than shows, and the rules that come with them are real. Exact hours land on the organizers' pages closer to each date.

Doburoku Festival — Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine
14–15 October 2026 · South end of the Ogimachi gasshō village
The harvest festival's first leg, on the same dates every year: rites from 8:00, a procession through the village from 9:00, and from about 15:30 the shrine's own cloudy doburoku sake is poured for visitors, with lion dances offered at 19:00.
16–17 October 2026 · Hatogaya, by the White Road junction on Route 156
The second leg, in the Hatogaya district — same rhythm as Ogimachi: morning rites, the village procession, doburoku poured in the shrine grounds from mid-afternoon, lion dances in the evening.
18–19 October 2026 · Iijima, opposite the Michi-no-eki Shirakawa-gō
The final leg closes the festival week in Iijima on October 18–19 — the same fixed dates each year, whatever the weekday.
Early November 2026 · Gasshō-zukuri Minka-en open-air museum

The open-air museum lights its maples for a few evenings as the mountain foliage peaks — the valley's colour runs from early to late October, this closes the season.

About 60 water cannons throw a curtain of water over the gasshō houses — roughly five minutes, twice, starting on a siren at 8:00. The village has run it for some fifty years; for thatched roofs, fire is the existential risk.
The date floats and is not reliably announced in advance — this is disaster-prevention practice, not a show. If you're there, watch from the viewpoint and keep clear of the crews.

Shirakawa-gō is legally designated heavy-snow country. Official guidance: snowfall and frozen roads from December through March, studless winter tyres required — even when the roads look clear, melt refreezes overnight.

On New Year's Day the Harugoma dancers go house to house through the gasshō settlement — a folk blessing for the year that the village has kept alive.

The village lights the snow-covered gasshō houses from 17:30 to 19:30 on four reserved evenings. The 41st edition runs January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 2027 — dates announced July 1, 2026. A nationwide cold wave can cancel an evening.

A small festival at the open-air museum recalling the sericulture that once paid for the great gasshō roofs — snow-bleaching of dyed cloth (yuki-sarashi) follows mid-month.
Late May 2027 · Ogimachi paddies

Saotome in traditional dress hand-plant the seedlings to rice-planting songs — the paddies between the gasshō houses are working fields, planted this way every spring.
