Suðurland runs from Þingvellir to the sand plains east of Hvolsvöllur, and most of it is far more exposed than Selfoss. The town sits low and inland on the Ölfusá, sheltered compared with the coast and the high ground either side. A yellow wind warning can be a serious day on Hellisheiði and an unremarkable one on Austurvegur. The Met Office's own text normally says where in the region the worst of it will be — that sentence is the one worth reading.
Every road west crosses high ground: Hellisheiði on the ring road and Þrengsli as the alternate, with Hveragerði on the far side. Wind, drifting snow and ice on those passes are what close them, and Vegagerðin usually changes a road's status after the Met Office has already issued the warning. Check the warning, then check the road.
The 1945 bridge is still the only crossing in town until the new one opens, and it is a single lane for heavy vehicles. In a strong wind warning high-sided vehicles are the first thing restricted anywhere in Iceland, and a restriction on that bridge backs traffic through the middle of Selfoss rather than around it.
