Town Tools builds free, public tools for Selebi Phikwe and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

Nobody has reported where their case stands yet — be the first.
Former BCL miners have asked more than once for clear, ongoing updates on the mine's liquidation and for public access to the accounts. Nobody has published a running account of individual claims, so this board is residents' own count of where things stand — not the liquidator's, and not verified against any record. If you have a claim in with the liquidator, you can say here which of the stages below best describes it right now.
the BCL liquidation has been running since 9 October 2016.
What this board is — and isn’t
What residents report here are their own, unverified accounts of where their claim stands — nobody has checked them against the liquidator's records, and the count below is not an official status update from the liquidator, the government, or this platform. If you need an authoritative answer about your own claim, use the official channel below, not this board.
Where to actually check your claim
BCL Limited's liquidator is Sanek Trust Recovery Services (South Africa); the liquidator handling claims correspondence is Darusha Moodliar, reachable at darusha@sanek.co.za. Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB), the government company now managing BCL's assets and liabilities during the liquidation, can be reached on +267 3810 300 or info@mdcb.co.bw.

How this board works
Each signed-in resident holds exactly one report at a time — reporting again replaces it rather than adding another voice, so the tally is always one person, one answer. There is nowhere to write free text: the only thing anyone can report is one of the stages listed above.
Background
Why this board exists
Former BCL miners petitioned the Office of the President to have the liquidator's contract ended, saying there was "a lack of transparency in the liquidation process and an unclear timeframe," and asked for a published policy on asset sales and settlements and public access to the liquidation accounts (Botswana Gazette). Separately, Botswana Mine Workers Union president Joseph Tsimako called for "clear and constant feedback" during the compensation process.
Where the liquidation itself stands
BCL's mine has been under liquidation since a Botswana High Court order on 9 October 2016. Government had advanced more than P1.6 billion to the liquidator by December 2022, and about 5,000 workers were retrenched, with 480 kept on for security and care-and-maintenance. The liquidator's safe-closure programme at the mine site started in October 2025 and passed its final regulatory inspection in July 2026 — remediation finishing, not the mine reopening. A Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the closure and liquidation, announced by President Duma Boko in March 2025 and due to be chaired by former Judge Malcolm Wallace, had still not visibly started as of mid-2026.
What's still unresolved about the workers' own package
Government promised an 18-month "soft landing" for BCL workers at the 2016 closure and reaffirmed it at a January 2026 consultation, but the payout formula itself has never been published. A government task force is described as still developing "compensation modalities." 107 former employees are reported to have received health-related compensation. None of that is the same as an individual worker knowing where their own claim stands — which is what this board asks residents to say for themselves.
