How much daylight Reine gets today — and how wildly that swings across the year. This far north the sun never sets for about seven weeks in midsummer, and never properly rises for about a month around Christmas. Everything here is worked out from Reine's position on the globe, so it is always up to date and never needs a forecast.

Around midsummer the sun simply doesn't set — it circles the sky all night. The midnight sun over Reine is usually given as about 26 May to 17 July. Then the year tips the other way: for roughly a month around Christmas (commonly given as about 7 December to 5 January) the sun never climbs above the horizon, and the brightest the day gets is a few hours of deep-blue mørketid twilight near midday.
The dates and times on this page are pure sun geometry for a flat, open horizon at sea level. Reine sits ringed by peaks that rise almost straight out of the water, so in practice the sun drops behind the mountains earlier and reappears later than these open-horizon figures — the lived dark season feels longer than the numbers, especially deep in the fjord.
Even in the darkest weeks there is usually a long, slow twilight around the middle of the day — the blue hour photographers travel here for. It is also when the northern lights, when they are out, hang over a landscape that is still faintly lit. The twilight window on the card above is roughly when that soft light falls.
