“Being held” means the fire is not expected to grow past its current size in the conditions of the day; “under control” means it is not expected to spread at all. Both can still be smoking and worked on for weeks. A fire’s size and stage lag the ground, especially in its first hours.

This page is about where fires are burning, not what you are breathing. Prince George sits in a valley bowl that holds smoke, so the air here can be bad for days from fires hundreds of kilometres away while nothing near town is burning at all — and it can be clear with a fire in range. BC Wildfire numbers every fire by the fire centre it falls in: G for the Prince George Fire Centre, C for the Cariboo Fire Centre that starts just south and west of the city. Prince George sits close to that boundary, which is why fires the same distance from town carry different letters — and why the authority issuing an evacuation alert changes with the fire. The Swede Creek fire southwest of the city in June 2026 was alerted by the Cariboo Regional District, not by the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.
Prince George is the reception centre for a very large piece of the province. In the summer of 2017 roughly 10,000 people came here from Williams Lake and the Cariboo, and about 3,000 more arrived in 2018. A fire well outside any of the bands below can still fill the city's hotels and change the week here, so distance from town is not the only thing worth watching.
When the City set up its emergency evacuation zones it deliberately matched them to the five coloured garbage collection zones, so the colour on the Find My Garbage Zone page is the zone you register under for alerts. Registering takes a few minutes and is worth doing before a fire season, not during one.
