What each month here is actually like — the heat, the monsoon Betwa, the festival crowds and the prices — so you can pick a month, or know what you are walking into.

This still hasn’t loaded. It looks stuck rather than slow, so reloading is worth a try now.
Orchha's year swings harder than most. The Betwa is scenery for eight months and a hazard for three; the afternoon is unusable for a quarter of the year; and the town's biggest crowds arrive on temple dates rather than school holidays. This is what each month is actually like, from the patterns of past years.
Pick a month
The current month is selected to start.
January
The best month to be here and everyone knows it. Comfortable all day, the river low and clear, rafting running. Makar Sankranti in mid-January and Basant Panchami at the end of it both fill the temple.
Weather
Mild and dry. Mornings near 9°C, afternoons around 25°C, clear skies.
Prices
high
Crowds
busy
These are patterns from past years, not a forecast. The festivals named here follow the Hindu lunisolar calendar and move by weeks between years — the month is reliable, the date is not. The town's festival calendar has the actual dates. For today's heat and today's river, use the heat-window and Betwa pages.

The year at a glance
January
The best month to be here and everyone knows it. Comfortable all day, the river low and clear, rafting running. Makar Sankranti in mid-January and Basant Panchami at the end of it both fill the temple.
February
Still the good season and the last full month of rafting. Walkable at any hour, which stops being true in March.
March
Mornings are fine and afternoons are not. Holi falls in March most years and the bazaar is busy with it. Ram Navami lands in late March or April and brings the year's second-largest temple crowd.
April
Plan around the afternoon or don't come. The monuments are quiet, which is the compensation. Ram Navami falls here in some years.
May
Sightseeing is an early-morning and after-dark activity. The river is at its lowest and the ghats are exposed.
June
The worst of both: the heat has not gone and the rain has not properly started. The first storms bring relief and the first sharp rises in the Betwa.
July
The Betwa can rise to dangerous levels within hours, and it has killed people bathing at the ghats. Rafting does not run. Watch the river from the bank and stay off the steps below the waterline.
August
Green, empty and photogenic, with the river running high and fast. Everything on the water is off. Roads and fields around the district can flood.
September
The month the season turns. The river stays high and unpredictable well after the rain stops, so treat the ghats as monsoon ghats until the level visibly drops. Sharad Navratri usually begins in the second half of the month.
About these tools
Town Tools builds free, public tools for Orchha and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

October
The season opens. Rafting starts again once the flow settles. Dussehra falls in early or mid-October most years, and Diwali at the end of it in some.
November
The busiest and arguably the best. Diwali falls here in some years, Kartik Purnima brings bathers to the ghats at first light, and Vivah Panchami — Ram and Sita's wedding, the town's own festival — falls anywhere from late November to the middle of December. It was 25 November in 2025 and is 14 December in 2026.
December
Peak season and comfortable throughout. Vivah Panchami falls in the first half of December in many years, including 2026 and 2027; in that week book a bed well ahead or stay in Jhansi and travel in.
September
Rain tailing off through the month; humid, with clear spells returning at the end.
