India's first designated Rural Tourism Village, about 8 km from Orchha on the Betwa. Local women run homestays and cook Bundeli meals, and show village life and crafts. The village was nominated for UN Tourism's 'Best Rural Tourism Village' award, and hosts like Rekha and Kamla Kushwaha run homestays under their own names.
Booking through the official Responsible Tourism programme means the money goes to the women's households, not a middleman.

A few simple choices put your spending where it does the most good in Orchha.
Buying craft directly from the women who make it — at TARAgram, in the village, or at the bazaar stalls — keeps the money with them rather than a reseller who took it on consignment.
Homestays and demonstrations are run by small women's groups. A booking through the official programme, or a word with your guesthouse a day ahead, works far better than a deal offered by someone at the monument gate.
You don't need a paid 'guide' to unlock a roof or a floor — the combined ticket covers them. Spend that money instead on a village meal or a piece of craft, where it reaches a household.

Girls and women in and around Orchha have trained in Bundelkhandi folk painting, some now teaching it and selling their work. Their pieces make a real, local souvenir — and buying directly puts the money in the artist's hands.
Look for the women's craft stalls in the temple bazaar and at the TARAgram outlet. There is no single storefront — ask, and buy from the person who painted it.
A young and growing livelihood rather than an organised shop; expect to find makers through the bazaar and the craft hub, not a fixed address.
