Is the Gannel crossable?

The Gannel is Newquay's tidal creek, and the coast path to Crantock crosses it on foot — but the two crossings only exist at all for part of the tide. Neighbours and walkers report what they find; check a tide table before you go.

Fern Pit crossing (Pentire – Crantock)
Footbridge, dry at low tide. When the tide covers it, the only way over is the seasonal foot ferry run by Fern Pit Beach Kitchen — fixed hours, roughly 10am–6pm, late May to September only, not tide-triggered. Outside those months and hours, there is no crossing here at all when the tide is in.

These are neighbours, not an official service. Look up Newquay's tide times before you go, and remember the Gannel floods fast once the tide turns.

How this works

Each report counts for about 6 hours, then drops off on its own. A spot shows once at least 1 recent report is in; when several are in we show the middle one, so a single voice can’t swing it.

These are neighbours and walkers describing what they found, not an official warning service — nobody monitors the Gannel in real time. In April 2016 an RNLI lifeguard and lifeboat crew rescued an elderly woman and her dog after they were cut off by the tide here, hidden by the reed beds; it happens. If you or someone else is cut off by the water, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard — do not try to wade or swim across a rising tide.
