A warning is about the weather, not about the ferry

These are the Meteorological Agency's hazard warnings for the island. Shikoku Kisen decides separately whether each crossing sails, and it publishes its own cancellation notices — which is what the "Are the Ferries Running?" page on this site reads. The two do not always move together: fog closes crossings with no warning in force at all, and an advisory can be running while every boat sails to time.

The Inland Sea is sheltered — the risk here is being on the wrong side

Naoshima sits inside the Seto Inland Sea, so it does not get the open-ocean storm surge that exposed Pacific coasts do. What a typhoon does here is stop the boats. With no bridge, that is the whole of it: a suspended crossing means a missed hospital appointment in Tamano, a high-school student who cannot get to Takamatsu, and a supply run that does not happen. The warnings worth acting on early are wind (暴風) and high waves (波浪).

When the warnings come

Typhoon season runs roughly July to October, with August and September the busiest. The June rainy season brings the heavy-rain (大雨) and flood (洪水) warnings instead. Winter brings strong north-westerlies that can close a crossing on a clear day.

What the words mean

The JMA issues three levels. 注意報 (advisory) means conditions could cause damage. 警報 (warning) means serious damage is possible. 特別警報 (emergency warning) is reserved for the scale of event seen once in decades — if one is issued, act on the town's instructions immediately and do not wait for anything on this page.
