What each month on Naoshima is really like — Inland Sea weather and typhoon risk, the winter museum-maintenance closures, and when the ferries and lodging fill up.
What each month is really like on Naoshima — the calm-but-typhoon-exposed Inland Sea weather, when the museums close for winter maintenance, and when the ferries and lodging fill up. 2026 is a quiet year between festivals: the Setouchi Triennale runs every three years and the next edition is 2028, so there is no festival on this year. It's the pattern of past years and the museums' seasonal rhythm, not a forecast for any one day.

The current month is selected to start.
January
The deep off-season. From around 13 January the main museums — Chichu, Lee Ufan, Benesse House — close for winter maintenance into spring, and the outdoor Kusama pumpkins go under wraps. Lovely and quiet, but check the Benesse calendar before coming for the art.
Weather
Cold, dry and clear; the calmest seas but the quietest island. Most museums shut for winter maintenance from about mid-month.
Storm risk
off season
Prices

Crowds

This is the usual rhythm of past years and the museums' seasonal pattern — not a forecast for any one day. Hours, closures and ferries change, so check the live sources below before you travel.

February
The quietest month. Most museums remain closed for maintenance — good for the quiet villages and the I♥湯 bath, less so for the galleries. Confirm what's open before you travel.
March
A good shoulder month — mild, and the museums reopen across March. Reopening dates vary by site, so check the Benesse calendar.
April
Pleasant and not yet crowded — until Golden Week at the very end of the month starts to fill the ferries. Book ahead if you're coming around 29 April.
May
Golden Week (around 29 April–6 May) is one of the busiest, priciest stretches of the year — ferries and lodging book out. Calm and lovely once it passes.
June
Rainy-season greenery and thinner crowds. Pack rain gear, and check the Benesse calendar — individual sites take short maintenance closures this month.

July
Hot and busy once the school holidays start. The sea is usually calm, but the first typhoons can disrupt ferries — keep an eye on the forecast and the last boat.
August
The busiest and most storm-prone month. Obon (around 11–16 August) packs the boats, and a passing typhoon can strand day-trippers. Plan around the last ferry and the weather.
September
Warmer than it looks and quieter than August, but September's typhoons are the serious ones — flexible plans pay off. Beautiful in the clear spells.
Arguably the best weather of the year, so weekends are busy. A late typhoon is still possible early in the month, but most days are golden.
November
Lovely autumn light and comfortable cycling. Weekends and the foliage season fill the ferries — come midweek if you can.
December
Winding down toward the winter closures. Quiet and clear; the Teshima/Inujima boat drops to a winter timetable, so confirm sailings before island-hopping.
