How to sort and put out household rubbish on Naoshima. The whole main island (Miyanoura 宮浦, Honmura 本村, Tsumuura 積浦, Bunkyō 文教区) now shares one weekly schedule. Search for an item below, or browse the categories. Put waste out at your nearest garbage station (ごみステーション) by 8:30 a.m. on the collection day — not the night before. Mis-sorted or wrong-day waste is left behind.
Type what you’re throwing out — it tells you which bag or cart it goes in.
Collected Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Paid town bag (60L / 40L / 10L). Drain food scraps well.
Collected Tuesday. Paid 40L bag with blue printing. Rinse first; aluminium and steel go together.
Collected Tuesday. Paid 40L 'resource' bag with red printing. Caps off (caps go in too), rinsed.
Collected Tuesday. Paid 40L bag with black printing. Wrap broken glass in newspaper.
Collected Thursday. Free — tie flat in a cross with string. Not on rainy days (wet paper can't be recycled).
Collected Tuesday. Free — put in a clear or semi-clear bag. Remove labels and wash.
Collected Tuesday. Free — clear or semi-clear bag. This is the island's hazardous stream.
