Worth knowing

Southeast winds are the worst possible direction

In post-tropical storm Lee (September 2023) the surge crested about 1.5 m above normal high tide just before 10 a.m. and flooded Main Street, and the power went out from around 7:30 a.m. An official made the point residents already knew: southeast winds are the "worst possible direction," because the bay's islands normally shelter the town — a southeast blow pushes the water straight in. If the power goes out

Mahone Bay runs its own electric utility, so Nova Scotia Power's outage map does not cover the town — there is no provincial map to check here. Report a fault to Town Hall at 902-624-8327, or after hours (4:30 p.m.–8:30 a.m., weekends and holidays) at 902-543-3251, and see "Is the Power Out?" on Town Tools for what neighbours are reporting. In a prolonged outage the fire hall at 41 Hawthorn Road opens as the town's Comfort Centre.
