Phone snatching is the London crime residents raise most often, and it is not spread evenly across the city — it is concentrated in the streets around Oxford Circus, Soho, Mayfair and Covent Garden. This page counts what has actually been reported to the Metropolitan Police around the West End over the last three published months, and plots where those reports cluster.

It covers the West End only. The police data is published as crimes near a point, so this is a neighbourhood board, not a pan-London map — but it is the neighbourhood Londoners from every borough come into, and the one where the risk genuinely sits.

Police street-level data is anonymized: each point is snapped to an approximate map location — a nearby street or landmark — and never an exact address. It shows where street thefts have been reported, not where they're happening right now, and it is not a live tracker.
The data runs roughly 6 to 8 weeks behind, and this is reported crime only — much of it is never reported, and most reported cases go unsolved.

What helps

Most snatches are from a moving bike, e-bike or scooter, so the risky moment is standing still on a pavement near the kerb with a phone out. Step back from the road, or into a doorway, before you look at it.
Walk with the phone in an inside or zipped pocket rather than a back pocket, an outside coat pocket or loose in a hand, and keep it off the table edge in a café or a pub garden.
Set a PIN or biometric lock and turn on Find My iPhone or Find My Device now — after it is gone is too late. Note your IMEI too: dial *#06# and keep the number somewhere that is not the phone.
If it is taken, call your network first to block the SIM and ask them to blacklist the IMEI, so the handset can't be reused. Then change the passwords for your email and banking apps from another device.
Report it to the police even when you don't expect the phone back — you need a crime reference number for insurance, and reports are what puts a street on the map at all.
Don't chase. Phones are replaceable; the people taking them are often on a bike and sometimes not alone.
Register serial numbers free on Immobilise so a recovered phone, laptop or bike can be matched back to you.

Checked on 30 July 2026 against the police's own data: within about a mile of Oxford Circus there were 3,164 street thefts reported in April, May and June 2026 — 22% of every crime recorded there. Around Croydon, over the same three months, there were 79. Croydon has a serious crime problem and it is a different one: violent crime, not phones. If you have seen a list naming four or five London "snatch hotspots" as equivalent, the data does not support it.

What "street theft" means here

The police category is theft from the person, which covers phone and bag snatches and pickpocketing alike. So not every report on this page was a phone taken from a hand — a good share of the West End total is pickpocketing in crowds, on a night out and around the stations. Both respond to the same habits.

The pins are approximate, and some are not streets

Police street-level data is anonymized by snapping each report to a shared nearby point, so the biggest clusters here carry labels like "On or near Nightclub", "On or near Shopping Area" or "On or near Theatre/Concert Hall" rather than an address. Read those as a kind of place, not a spot: reports cluster where people gather in crowds at night, which is the useful part of the pattern.
