London is 33 separate councils — 32 boroughs plus the City of London — and each one sets its own council tax, so the bill for the same size of home can differ by more than £1,500 across the city. Type your postcode to find which council you’re in and what this year’s charge is for your band, and see how it compares.
The Band D charge for 2026/27, and roughly what that is a month over 10 instalments. Every other band is a fixed fraction of this: Band A is two-thirds, Band H is double.

Each council sets its own charge to fund its services — bins, social care, libraries, roads — and adds a separate charge for adult social care. Two of London’s councils, Wandsworth and Westminster, have kept their charges famously low for years; outer-London boroughs like Kingston and Croydon are the highest. The Mayor’s GLA precept is the one part everyone pays the same.
Your band (A to H) was set on what your home was worth in April 1991, not today’s price. If you think it’s in the wrong band you can check and challenge it with the Valuation Office Agency through GOV.UK — but a challenge can move a band up as well as down.
These are each council’s standard charge. A small number of addresses pay an extra local levy on top: in the parts of Wandsworth and Merton within about three-quarters of a mile of Wimbledon and Putney Commons, the Commons Conservators add £41.38 at Band D. Your own bill is the final word — this page is for comparing councils, not for checking your account.
