About these tools

Town Tools builds free, public tools for London and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

River levels

Levels are measured against each gauge’s usual range — “above typical” doesn’t mean flooding, but it’s the first thing that moves when water is on its way.

Gauge	Speaks for	Reading	Level
Thames at Kingston	The non-tidal Thames through Kingston and Hampton Wick, south-west London.	4.358 m	Within typical range
Thames at Teddington Lock	Teddington Lock, the tidal limit of the Thames — the boundary between the river that rises with rain and the tidal river below.	-0.025 m	Below typical range

Each reading is metres on that gauge’s own scale, so compare a gauge with itself over time — not one gauge with another.

Worth knowing

The Thames Barrier protects tidal London

Central and east London's riverside is defended from North Sea surge tides by the Thames Barrier at Woolwich, which the Environment Agency closes when a dangerous tide is forecast. That is why this tool watches the river level upstream, at Kingston and Teddington, rather than the tidal gauges in the city — those rise and fall with every tide rather than with rainfall.

London's everyday flood risk is surface water

Most London flooding is not the river bursting its banks but intense summer downpours overwhelming drains and gullies, as in July 2021 when roads and Tube stations flooded across the city. Heavy-rain surface flooding can happen anywhere, with little warning, and may not show as a river warning here — check the official service below and your borough's alerts.
