The outlook is a forecast model (Open-Meteo) read at the viewpoint’s height, not a camera on the ridge. The headline is banded only on published visibility scales — clear at 5 km and above, hazy from 1 to 5 km, clouded in below 1 km (the WMO/Met Office fog line). Low cloud is the model’s low-cloud fraction, the reason a ridge whites out while the valley is clear. Hill mist forms and lifts within minutes and sits on one ridge, so the model can miss it — treat this as a best guess, go early, and trust the sky you can see.

Haputale nights and dawns are genuinely cold by Sri Lankan standards, and the ridge is colder and windier than town. Bring a warm layer for an early start — you'll be standing still in the wind waiting for the light.
The Thangamale ridge walk to Idalgashinna ends along the railway and back on the train — only a few trains a day, and the timetable has been on a special post-cyclone schedule. Confirm the return train at the station (052 226 8071) before setting out.
Haputale sits on a ridge at 1,431 m where the land drops sharply to the southern plains.
