What's Open in Haputale Today?
Adisham, the tea factory and the town's offices keep different rules on a poya day — one opens because it's a holiday, the others shut. Pick your day and see which is which.

About these tools
Town Tools builds free, public tools for Haputale and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

Haputale runs on a calendar that catches visitors out. Adisham — the monastery in the old planter's mansion, and the jam shop everyone comes for — is shut Monday to Friday, but opens on poya days and public holidays. The tea factory is the other way round: open through the week, and not processing on a holiday. The government offices follow the holidays too. Pick the day you'll be here and see which is which.
Every poya (full-moon) day is a public holiday in Sri Lanka, and they move each month — 2026 has thirteen of them, including an extra Adhi Poson. That is the fact this planner exists to handle.

What a public holiday does here
A public holiday does not treat everything the same way: some places open because it is a holiday, and others shut for exactly the same reason. The dates below are already in this planner, so picking a date gives you the answer for that day.
Open on a public holiday: Adisham Bungalow (St Benedict's Monastery).
Closed on a public holiday: Dambatenne Tea Factory, Haputale Urban Council office, Haputale Divisional Secretariat.
Dates from the 2026 holiday list gazetted by the Ministry of Public Administration, plus the 2027 poya days. 2027's other holidays are not gazetted yet, and the Islamic dates (Id-Ul-Fitr, Id-Ul-Alha, Milad un-Nabi) are set by moon sighting — they are only listed here once confirmed.

Before you go
Adisham Bungalow (St Benedict's Monastery)
A working Benedictine monastery: only the library, the living room and the garden are open to visitors, and the shop sells the monks' jams, cordials and pickles. It also opens on Sri Lankan school-vacation weekdays, which this planner does not track — if you are here midweek during school holidays it may be open anyway. It is closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day even though both are public holidays.
Dambatenne Tea Factory
Nothing is plucked on a Sunday, so a Monday visit often finds the machines idle even though the doors are open — Tuesday to Saturday mornings are when there is tea actually being made. The factory breaks for lunch around 12:00–13:00. It publishes no holiday calendar of its own; Sri Lankan factories generally do not process on public holidays and poya days, so this planner treats a holiday as closed here. Dambatenne is 9 km up the hill from town, on the road to Lipton's Seat.
Haputale Urban Council office
Roads, drains, waste, water, building approvals and the library, on Railway Station Road. The council does not publish its own hours; these are the standard Sri Lankan public-service hours (8.30 am to 4.15 pm, Monday to Friday). Ring 057 226 8075 before making a special trip.
Haputale Divisional Secretariat
Registrations, permits, Samurdhi welfare and disaster coordination for the division's 26 Grama Niladhari areas. Standard public-service hours; the office is shut on every public holiday, which in Sri Lanka means every poya day as well.
Reservations
Adisham Bungalow (St Benedict's Monastery) — No booking — pay at the gate. It is a 3 km walk or a short tuk-tuk from town.
Dambatenne Tea Factory — Turn up and ask; tours run when the factory is running.
Admission
Adisham Bungalow (St Benedict's Monastery) — About Rs 500 for foreign visitors and Rs 100 for Sri Lankans, cash at the gate. Reported amounts vary a little.
Dambatenne Tea Factory — Around Rs 250 per person for the tour, cash.
Confirm before you go
This is a planner built from each place's published pattern and the gazetted holiday list — not a live feed, and none of these four publishes a day-by-day calendar. Adisham has no website: if the day matters, ask your guesthouse to phone ahead. For the council, ring 057 226 8075. A poya date can also shift by a day if the full moon is confirmed differently from the projection.
