Worth knowing

Cold here is a different animal

Dawson's record low is −58.3 °C, set on 3 February 1947, and a run of days at −40 °C or colder is an ordinary part of a Klondike winter — it happened again through the December 2025 cold snap. At those temperatures exposed skin freezes in minutes, a vehicle that stops can strand you, and a block heater is a daily habit rather than a precaution. Tell someone where you are going, and carry winter survival gear on the highway.

A cold snap leans on the whole grid

During the December 2025 cold snap, Dawson and other communities saw power outages while the territory's grid leaned on diesel generation and asked industrial and mining customers to switch to their own generators. A warning on this page is a good prompt to check that your heat has a plan B — and to look at the power page in this town if the lights flicker.

Weather and the river crossing are one question in October

West Dawson and Sunnydale have no road bridge. From late October the ferry is out and the ice bridge is not yet in, and how long that gap lasts is decided by how cold the nights get. The River Crossing Status page in this town explains which phase the calendar says we are in; 511 Yukon says what is actually running.
