If you’re heading out

Waiting for the school bus

At a frostbite-risk wind chill, cover cheeks, nose, ears and hands — these freeze first. Mitts keep little hands warmer than gloves.

Walking the dog

If it's freezing your skin in minutes, it is hard on paws too. Keep it short, and watch for a lifted paw or limping.

Heading out on the land or by skidoo

Tell someone your route and when you'll be back, carry what you'd need if you had to stop moving, and remember bare metal and a hard wind speed frostbite up. Polar-bear season changes the plan too — check the alert line.

Good to know

One of the coldest places people live
