Thousands of belugas move into the warmer, shallow Churchill River estuary from about mid-June, peaking in July, to feed, calve, moult and shelter from orcas; most have left by mid-September. This is one of the world's largest gatherings — roughly 55,000–57,000 belugas summer in western Hudson Bay, with an estimated 3,000–4,000 in the Churchill estuary at the peak. The close encounters are on the water, by boat, Zodiac or kayak; with a hydrophone you can hear them sing.

You can sometimes see belugas from land in July and August, though the close, reliable encounters are on the water. Polar bears are never safe to approach on foot — watch them only with a licensed operator.

As Hudson Bay melts, bears come ashore from late July and gather along the coast through the autumn, waiting for freeze-up so they can return to the ice to hunt seals. Viewing peaks from mid-October to mid-November, almost always from a Tundra Buggy on the tundra toward Wapusk National Park. Never approach a bear on your own — see the safety guidance below.
