When the water goes down
The same low places go under in heavy rain, every wet season. If you live, work or travel through one of these, plan around the low roads before the rain sets in.
Streets in the town centre that go under first: NIB Road and the commercial stretch around Melcom took on water in the 29 April 2025 downpour, leaving shoppers and traders stranded (Ghana News Agency).

The town's streams drain through the wetlands into the Fosu Lagoon at Bakaano. When the lagoon is high and its inlets are choked or built over, the low ground here holds water instead of draining to the sea.
Cape Coast sits on low coastal ground cut by small streams that should drain through the wetlands into the Fosu Lagoon and out to sea. Two things break that: the gutters silt up and fill with refuse, and buildings have gone up on the waterways and lagoon edge that the water needs. So an ordinary heavy downpour backs up into the streets and low compounds instead of running away — which is why the same neighbourhoods flood every wet season, and why the Assembly's response after June 2026 was to clear the drains and the structures blocking them.
