A single evening's rain left NIB Road, the Melcom area and the Kingsway-to-Tantri stretch under water and residents stranded in their homes; taxi fares jumped about 30% while it lasted. "It's a recurring problem," one trader told the Ghana News Agency — "the gutters are always clogged, and it's only a matter of time before the next floods set in."

The town's small streams drain through wetlands into the Fosu Lagoon at Bakano, and choked gutters back up long before the lagoon does. A study cited by ICLEI found the metro lost about a quarter of its dense vegetation between 1991 and 2018, so rain now runs straight off hard ground.
