When the Mayor declares a snow emergency, Boston bans parking on the city's main roads, and the "space saver" custom has its own rules that change by neighbourhood.
This explains the rules — not whether an emergency is on right now
This page explains the city’s snow-emergency parking rules. It does not tell you whether a snow emergency is in effect at this moment. Before you move your car, check the city’s snow page or call 311.
When the Mayor declares a snow emergency, parking is banned on marked snow-emergency routes — the city's main arteries — so plows can get through.
Cars left on those streets during the emergency are ticketed and towed.
With a Boston resident parking sticker you can park at participating garages at a discounted rate during a snow emergency.
Some garages are open to all residents; others are limited to a specific neighbourhood. Check the list before you go.
A space saver is an object you put in a parking spot you dug out to hold it while you're away. In Boston, a space saver is legal only during a declared snow emergency.
Once the emergency ends, you have 2 days to keep using a space saver — then take it in.
Public Works removes and discards space savers left out after the removal window, and in the neighbourhoods where they're banned.
Tap your neighbourhood to see the space-saver rule there. The full list is below either way.

Town Tools builds free, public tools for Boston and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.
Legal only while a snow emergency is declared, then must come down within the removal window.
