About these tools

Town Tools builds free, public tools for Vestmannaeyjar and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

Worth knowing

What the two levels mean

Iceland's alert level runs from green (normal background) through yellow (volcanic unrest) and orange (heightened unrest) to red. The aviation colour code runs the same four colours and is about air traffic: an orange or red code can stop flights, including the planes to Vestmannaeyjar, even when nothing is happening on the islands.

If you are told to leave

Warnings and evacuation orders come from Almannavarnir (Civil Protection) by text message to phones in the affected area, and through 112. In 1973 the whole town left by sea in one night; a plan for how your household would get to the harbour is worth having.
