Heimaey has two mainland harbours, and which one you get is not your choice — the sea decides, and it can decide for weeks at a time. Everything on the far side changes with it: the drive, the number of sailings a day, and the time you have to set off to make one. This page costs both harbours out for the places islanders actually go.
The distances and driving times are road-network figures, measured once on OpenStreetMap routing and written down here, and they are fair-weather figures with no traffic and no winter in them. Herjólfur's own guidance says the same thing in rounder numbers — about two hours between Landeyjahöfn and the capital area "í góðu færi", and about 45 minutes from the capital area to Þorlákshöfn. Crossing times and the 30-minute check-in are Herjólfur's own published figures; the ferry closes five minutes before departure.
