Between the rains — the drier months.
Some rain in the forecast, nothing heavy.
Techiman floods in the same low places almost every rainy season, when the Tano spills its banks and the drains can't carry the water away. This page shows where, where the year stands in the two wet seasons, and whether the weather model expects heavy rain in the next few days — so you can plan around the low ground before it goes under. It is not a flood warning.
Between the rains — the drier months
Some rain in the forecast, nothing heavy.
The wettest of the next three days looks like Wednesday, 26 August, with about 6 mm expected.
The same low places flood when the heavy rain returns. The next wet season is the minor wet season.
The real warnings come by radio
These are weather-model estimates of rainfall, not measurements, and never a flood forecast. Heavy rain on the hills is a reason to be watchful; calm skies are never a promise.
After a flood, treat the water as unsafe
The same low places go under in heavy rain, every wet season. If you live, work or travel through one of these, plan around the low roads before the rain sets in.
One of the worst-hit areas when the Tano overflows. The river spills into the low lanes and drains into people's rooms, ruining property; it has flooded here in more than one rainy season.
Floods when the Tano overflows and the drains clog. Some buildings sit on the waterways themselves, which blocks the water's path and makes the flooding worse.
Two of the five communities the assembly and NADMO named as flood-prone after the 2022 floods — low ground beside the river that goes under in the heavier rains.
Named among the town's flood-prone spots by NADMO. It is low-lying market ground near the drains; when the rains are heavy the water collects here and trading stops until it drains.
A different kind of flood: the community's one access road and its narrow bridge can't pass the water, so about an hour of heavy rain can cut the village off — keeping children from school until it drains. This is a road being cut off, not the Tano spilling into homes.
Techiman sits where the Tano River runs low through the town. The river has silted up with sand and debris, so it spills its banks sooner; rain then collects in the low areas where the drains are clogged or where buildings have been put up on the waterways themselves. After the 2022 floods NADMO pulled down some structures built on the waterways and took some landlords to court. Clearing and desilting the drains and the river before the rains is the thing residents have asked for most.
