Techiman's market runs on the harvest. Prices here swing with the two rains and the crops they bring — a glut of new yam in the middle of the year, maize after each rains, and the long tomato lean season when traders cross to Burkina Faso to fill the gap. The staple that sets the calendar. In this forest–savanna zone it is a double crop — one planting with the big rains, a second with the short rains — so it comes to market twice, and prices ease after each harvest.

The savanna crop that made the market famous — traders come from the north and from four neighbouring countries for it. The new-yam season is the year's big event; the main dig then runs on through the dry months.

The buffer. Planted with the rains and lifted whenever it is needed, from about a year on — so it is on the floor all year and steadies a household through a poor maize season.

A forest crop from the south of the junction. The stools carry bunches through the year, heaviest in the wet months — one of the crops that makes Techiman a place where forest and savanna produce trade side by side.

The crop that shows the calendar most sharply. Ghana grows little tomato from about December to May, so through the first half of the year Techiman's traders cross to Burkina Faso to fill the gap — the lean season when prices climb hardest. The local rain-fed crop then comes in from about May.

Rain-fed — the two rains set everything
The farms around Techiman grow on rainfall, not irrigation, so there is no watering timetable to follow — the calendar simply follows the two rainy seasons. When the rains come late or fall short, sowing and harvest shift with them, and the market feels it. Little of the region is irrigated yet, which is why the tomato lean season sends traders to Burkina Faso every year.
These are the usual months for the Techiman area, not a forecast. The rains can come late or fail, and a crop can run early or late by weeks — always check on the market floor or on the radio (Classic 91.9 FM, Akina 100.9 FM) before you load a truck.
