1 practice near here is listed as taking new NHS patients
Ring before you set out: a listing is a practice’s own statement to the NHS, not a booked appointment, and lists fill fast. Read from the NHS directory .
In pain right now?
Any NHS dentist can give you urgent treatment even if they are not taking new patients and you have never been to them before. Ring them and ask for an urgent appointment. In Cornwall the urgent route is NHS 111, or Smile Together on 0333 405 0290, which you can ring yourself without a referral. Call 999 if swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing.
These are neighbours reporting what they were told on the phone. They are not the NHS, they are not a booking system, and nobody here can get you an appointment.
The status beside each practice is that practice's own statement to the NHS directory, read here once a week. It can be out of date in both directions: a list that closed in the spring may still say it is open, and a practice that quietly started taking people may still say nothing at all. That is what the neighbour reports are for.
Get an email when a list opens
Nobody is going to check this page every week for four years. We read the NHS directory each week — leave an address and we will write to you the week a practice near here starts taking new NHS patients. One email when that changes, not one a week, and you can stop them at any time.
People in St Austell swap the names of practices that might be taking NHS patients, because the answer changes without anyone announcing it. The NHS does publish it — every practice tells the directory whether its list is open — but it is buried in a search almost nobody knows to run, and a practice that has not updated its entry looks the same as one that has.
So this page does two things. It reads that directory once a week and lays out what each practice near St Austell says. And it asks you: when you rang one, what did they actually tell you? Three taps, no names, no comment box. Between the two you get closer to the truth than either on its own.

A closed list is not a closed door if you are in pain
Urgent treatment is a separate thing from registering. Any NHS dentist can treat you urgently whether or not their list is open and whether or not you have been before, and it is one Band 1 charge, currently £27.90, or nothing if you are exempt.
Ask to go on the list even when the answer is no
Practices work through their waiting lists when capacity comes back, and Cornwall's mobile dental van invites people off those lists. If you never ask, you are not on one. It costs a phone call and it is the single most useful thing on this page.
Why the directory says three different things
Some practices tell the NHS they are accepting and say who — children, adults, adults entitled to free care. Some say they have not confirmed either way, which is the NHS's own wording for an entry nobody has updated. And most say nothing at all about routine care, which usually means an urgent-only service. They are three different answers and this page keeps them apart.
Children are often the easier answer
A practice with no room for adults will sometimes still take under-18s, and NHS dental care is free for them. Where the directory says who a practice is accepting, that line is printed in full above.
