What each month is really like in Sa Pa — the cool, often foggy mountain climate, the rice-terrace seasons, the summer monsoon and its landslides, the winter frost, and when the crowds and prices peak. It's the pattern of past years, not a forecast for any one day.
Pick a month
The current month is selected to start.
January
Bring serious warm layers. Lovely in clear spells, but roads turn foggy and can ice up, and frost can damage winter crops. Cold snaps draw sudden weekend crowds chasing frost or rare snow.
Weather
Coldest month — cold, damp and often fog-bound; frost (băng giá) on high ground, occasional ice on Fansipan.
Prices
low
Crowds
medium
These are the patterns of past years — what each month is usually like — not a forecast for any particular day. Sa Pa's mountain weather changes fast: a clear morning can fog over by noon, and heavy rain can cut the road from Lào Cai with little warning. Check the live forecast and road notices before you travel.

February
Cold and atmospheric. Very busy around Tết, when much of Vietnam is on the move — book well ahead and expect higher prices.
March
One of the gentler months — cool, clearer and in bloom. Good for walking the terraces before the rains set in.
April
Pleasant, with the water-pouring season just beginning to fill the terraces by month's end.
May
The famous flooded-terrace season — stunning. Pack for rain and expect cloud to close in by midday.
June
Green and dramatic, but the wettest run is starting — watch road notices after heavy rain.

Lush but genuinely wet. The inbound road is most likely to be disrupted now — keep plans flexible and check the road before travelling.
August
Wet and green. Fine if you don't mind rain and you keep an eye on the road after storms.
September
The harvest gold begins around mid-month — beautiful and busy. Some landslide risk lingers early on.
October
Arguably the best month: dry, clear skies and golden terraces. The busiest and priciest time — book ahead.
