About these tools

Town Tools builds free, public tools for Oxford and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

What helps

Use two locks — a solid D-lock plus a second, different lock — so one tool can’t take the whole bike.

Lock the frame AND a wheel to a fixed, immovable stand, not just to itself.

Park somewhere busy and overlooked rather than a quiet corner or alley.

Photograph the bike and note the frame number before anything happens.

Take lights and quick-release wheels or saddle with you.

Local notes

Reported-theft hotspots

Reports cluster around the city centre and the university quarter — Broad Street through to Oriel Street and Magdalen Street — plus Gloucester Green and the bus and rail stations.

Where to park more securely

Oxford has monitored cycle parking at the railway station and beneath Westgate; a covered, overlooked, monitored rack beats a lamppost on a side street.
