What helps

Report it every time, even when it feels small or repetitive. The police and the council act on patterns, and a single incident that never gets logged is a pattern that never appears.

Keep a note of dates, times and what happened. A diary of repeated incidents is the evidence the council's anti-social behaviour and housing teams need before they can use their powers.

999 if it is happening now and someone could be hurt, or a crime is in progress. 101, or the report form on the South Wales Police website, for anything after the fact.

If the behaviour involves a council or housing-association tenancy, report it to the landlord as well as the police — they have remedies the police do not.

Reports can be made anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you would rather not give your name.

Local notes

Merthyr Tydfil Together

The joint council and South Wales Police operation in the town centre reported more than 100 arrests in five months — mostly retail theft — along with 40+ stop-searches, 70+ anti-social behaviour referrals and 150+ intelligence reports. Gates and bollards have been going in to stop vehicles being driven on the High Street.

Anti-social behaviour is not the biggest number here

Across all reported crime near the town centre, violent crime and shoplifting are each recorded more often than anti-social behaviour. This page is filtered to anti-social behaviour because that is the complaint the town's own councillors and traders raise most; the whole picture is on data.police.uk.

The data runs about two months behind

Forces publish to data.police.uk monthly and in arrears. At the last check the newest month available was May 2026. That lag is normal and is why this page is a record of what has been reported over months, never an answer to "is it safe out there tonight".
