Worth knowing

Winter storms close US-2

US-2 through Tumwater Canyon is the only direct route to the Seattle side, and WSDOT closes it for avalanche control, rockfall and snow — sometimes for hours, sometimes longer. Check WSDOT before a winter trip; the passenger detour is the Chumstick Highway, and US-97 over Blewett Pass is the longer freight route.

Flooding on the Wenatchee

The river through town floods. In December 2025 it crested near 17 feet and destroyed a stretch of US-2 for about two months. A Flood Warning here is serious — don't drive through water across a road, even shallow-looking water.

Wildfire smoke, mid-August into September

Most late summers bring wildfire smoke that pushes the air to unhealthy or worse. When a fire is near, watch for Air Quality Alerts here and check the town's air-quality page for the live number.
